In period January 30 – February, 2 prof. Pidlisnyuk visited Columbia University and Harvard University having a goal to introduce the project’s results to professionals involved in sustainable energy and climate change issues and to promote the developing of the broader networking. She also had interests to the new courses and graduated programs proposed at that leading universities which are focused at the sustainable energy production, bioproducts and climate change topics.
While at Columbia University prof. Pidlisnyuk met with De. Alissa Park, Director of Lenfest Centre for Sustainable energy, The Earth Institute. She presented main accomplishment of NATO project and future plans and discussed the possible cooperation in the topic of biomass transformation to the energy and biobased products. Dr.Park introduced directions of research going on at the Centre with focus at the biomass transformation. She also presented a new Master program recently accredited at the Centre which combines the environmental engineering disciplines with social and economic courses. The program included the requested courses from core area: Introduction to Carbon Management; Carbon Management and Decision Making; Humans and the Carbon Cycles; Land Use and Carbon Management; Carbone Capture; Carbon Storage; O2 utilization and conversion; Earth and Environmental Report. The selective courses of the program are: Introduction to Environment Law; Climate Change Law; Climate Change policy; Consumption and Efficiency; International Cooperation&Institutions; Energy Modelling. It was agreed to initiate cooperation in the topic regarding peculiarities of transformation of miscanthus biomass to different bioconversion products.
Prof. Pidlisnyuk participated at the seminar in Environmental Economic and Policy at Harvard Kennedy School where the presentation “Applying Asset pricing theory to calibrate the price of Climate Risk” was delivered by Dr. Gernot Wagner, Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Lecturer on Environmental Science and Public Policy at Harvard University. Dr.Wagner introduced EZ-Climate model that allows for a calibration of the optimal carbon dioxide price based on probabilistic assumptions around climate damages. Unlike standard models, which often estimate cost of delay based on optimal prices of carbon dioxide, Dr.Wagner with coauthors: Kent Daniel and Robert Litterman calculated large costs of delay in pricing CO2 emissions: delaying implementation by one year leads to annual consumption losses of over 2%.; 5-years delay leads to 11% losses, and 10 years delay leads to 23% losses. That theory confirmed the necessity of essential mitigation measures where implementation of the green technologies are among the leader ones. While at Harvard University prof. Pidlisnyuk visited the International Studies and was introduced the new program “Climate Change and Energy Policy making for the long term” which was developed by Harvard Kennedy School. The program to consider: a) the facts about climate change and its impact; b) the potential policies to address climate change; c) the way how governmental and no-governmental actors might compliment action to mitigation&adaptation measures. The elements of the programs and courses will be incorporated into the new courses to be developed within the NATO project.
